Day 0 + 1 in Peru!

Day 0

We arrived safely in Peru after a long loooong flight full of non-stop baby wailing. Daniel´s father and brother were waiting for us after a thorough customs inspection (we pressed a green button and a green light appeared and they said, Ok go). We immediately recognized each other, and they whisked us away back to their beautiful home in Surco, Lima. The traffic was almost as bad as rush hour in Ottawa, even though it was 10:30pm!

Daniels family is so super friendly, they welcomed us into the family right away, and as every minute goes by we feel more and more at ease here.

Day 1

We woke up to a nice breakfast of grenadia, mandarins, bread, cold cuts and cheese and coffee. Grenadia is a type of fruit we had never had before - the inside looks like a pomegranate but it tastes like crunchy candy in a sweet syrup!

In the afternoon we took a walk with Claudia, Daniels awesome sister. She took us around her neighborhood, including to a park area with a monument called the "friendship arch", a gift from Spain to Peru. The park was full of flora and fauna unfamiliar to us. In fact, everything is unfamiliar to us!!! We are definately experiencing culture shock. There are very few familiar things here - everything is different even if its only in a small way.

We accompanied Claudia to the movie theatre she works at, and we finally got to see the movie we have been too busy to see - Hangover. Except here in Peru, it is called "¿Que pasa ayer?", which translates as "what happened yesterday?" Loved it!

We took a taxi home, which was un poco loco (a little crazy) as drivers here are very different from Canada. There are few road rules strictly adhered to, and many many honks! We paid too much, as our Spanish is not yet good enough to know how to say, "don't rip me off!". I wasn´t too upset though because in Canadian dollars our taxi ride only cost us about $4, instead of $2.50. Daniels father spent over an hour with us tonight teaching us how to count, the alphabet, and useful phrases. So for next time, we now know to say "Yo pago seis soles" (I pay six soles).

Our Spanish in one day has grown in leaps and bounds... I can´t imagine how much we´ll know by the end of this trip!

It´s now past midnight so I will close to go to sleep, hasta luego!
